VSB Doom 0.2 ============ VSB Doom is a recompiled version of DOOM. It is based around the A.E. Van Vogt fixup 'Voyage of the Space Beagle', offering the ability to fry monsters with microwaves (at the expense of health) and provides for the eating of corpses :-) Ideally it runs with Martin Howe's BOMBAY72 graphics patch, else it gets pretty meaningless. With Bombay-72 it strongly resembles Coeurl from the first few chapters of Voyage of the Space Beagle, Originally a short story called 'The Black Destroyer'. What have I got in my pocket? ============================= It consists of: readme.vsb - You're reading it vsb047.exe - recompiled DOOM exe cwsdpmi.exe - Dos extender for VSB, C.W.Sandmann 0.91 release 4 vsb72.wad - new resources vsb.bat - batch file to run it.. EDIT THIS! I had VSBdoom 0.1: What's changed? =================================== -Upgrade to source base 0.47, fixes a lot of bugs -Quote from the book when you die. (It's clipped for 320x200, full quote in 640x400 or better) -Bug list -What's changed section What's it do? ============= New Difficulty Levels (reverse order): What are you? 1. Cougar (Easy: a Cougar can top anyone) 2. Tomcat 3. Pussycat 4. Kitten (Hard: a kitten will get smeared) 5. Mouse Weapons: 1. Psychic blast (takes 1 health unit per skill level!) 2. Paws (For gun-switches) Deadly dangers: 1. Imps 2. More Imps 3. Imps that aren't dead 3. Other Coeurls (Multiplayer mode, not yet tested) Installation ============ 0. Install Bombay-72 first... 1. Go into your doom directory, and empty the zipfile there. (If you are a tidy soul and you have already unpacked it elsewhere, you should copy the vsb.bat and cwsdpmi.exe files into your doom directory.) 2. Edit the VSB.BAT file, and make sure that it points to the bombay72.wad. 3. Go to your doom directory and type VSB 4. For hi-res and 65536 colours, add '-width 640 -height 480 -hicolor' to the VSB.BAT file and try again. This can be slow. 5. For optimum performance, you need VESA 2.0 support. Get UNIVBE or a free program specific to your video card, VLGX6UPG for VL-600, s3vbe20 for S3's CLVBETSR for Cirrus Logic etc. See your video card maker's web page. 6. If a window pops up and says 'This may run better in MS-DOS mode' then your computer is infected with a virus called 'Windows 95'. ;-) You now have three options: i. Add the parameter -ilovebill to the batchfile. ii. Click on 'Ok' and it will probably work. Probably... iii. Make a special link for running DOOM, edit its properties and SWITCH OFF 'Advise MS-DOS mode as necessary' iv. Download and install DRDOS 7.02 from http://www.caldera.com You can make it dual-boot with what you are currently using. And for the purposes of playing Doom etc. it's free :-) Why does..? =========== Q. It said 'game mode indeterminate', 'No files found' or 'PNAMES not found' A. Run it from your Doom Directory. Q. There wasn't any sound. A. Run Doom's SETUP program and select your soundcard. If you just choose 'Soundblaster', that should get it working. Try using GENERAL MIDI for the music if you can, because it's nicer. Q. Why is COUGAR the easiest? A. Because it makes more sense to me (if no-one else). Consider the Hexen: With all the powers of the Pope, it should be a walkover, and if you're just an Altar boy you ought to get squashed. Instead, the Pope gets murdered and the Altar boy can complete it blind. Q. Suddenly the screen went red and I died A. Watch out for those imps, boy! :-) Q. I can't pick up the guns A. Have you ever seen a cat that can pick up guns? Q. This is cool.. what else have you made for doom? A. Pop down to my web page and see. KANSAM'S TRIAL (kansam9.zip) - An episode of nicely-constructed levels THE SKY MAY BE (smb_v102.zip) - A mind-blowing Doom conversion THE BLESSED ENGINE (bless19b.zip) - Imps with BFGs and god-slaying barons Q. Why do the Imps have the EMR blast too? A. It makes it nice and hard, also I'm used to it because I've been playing Blessed Doom for the last 3 years... Q. Can I see the source code? A. Email me and I'll send you the modifications needed to the original source. If you compile it with the switch -DWAVYDOOM it will be VSB doom. Bugs ==== You can eat the End of Episode monsters. If you do this on E2M8 or E3M8 you will be very very shafted. The bunny scene crashes in 320x100(!) I'll take this up with Chi.. Disclaimers =========== Firstly, Doom, Quake and Id are (in the context of computer games) trademarks of Id Software, who gave us these wonderful games, made lots of hardware obsolete and stuck the games industry in this rut of boring Doom clones that only work in Windows-2067 and barely work even then. ;-| Secondly, it is most unlikely that VSB doom will do anything truly awful. If it does, then it's your fault because you ran it. :-) Thirdly, VSB doom is made from DOSDOOM source base 0.47, which supports music, sound, high-resolution and hicolour graphics. It was ported to Linux by IDDT, and back to DOS again by Chi Hoang. 8-) Finally, Voyage of the Space Beagle was written by A.E. Van Vogt in 1951. Although it was up in our vast, library-like attic, I would probably not have thought to read it for several years, had it not been for Martin Howe and his Bombay-72 conversion for Doom. VSBdoom should be considered a free derivative of Voyage of the Space Beagle and Bombay-72 which is also a free derivative of Voyage of the Space Beagle.
